Use of Landsat Multispectral Imagery in Estimating Snow Areal Extent and Snow Water Content Cost-Effectively

چکیده
I '!be objective of this investigationl is to design a general remote sensing-aided information .system to provide the estimates of two important inputs to .water yieid forecast roodels. These input paraJreters are snow areal extent, snow water content, and cost-effectiveness analysis applied to snow water content-est1ma.tion. The techniques under development in this investigation are being tested on the water source basin for the California Water Proj ect • This area is' known as the Feather River Watershed. With the cooperation of the California Department of Water Resources and the University of California at Davis. The general approach involves a stepwise sequence of identification of the required information, sample design, measurement/estimation, and evaluation of results. All the relevant and available information types needed in the estimation process are being defined. These include landsat, and aircraft imagery supported with ground data where applicable. In case of snow areal extent, the procedure developed has been applied to three dates in 1973 with satisfactory and cost-effective results. The . results are maps of snow areal extent along with their variance, population ratio estimator, confidence intervals, and allowable error for each date. In case of snow water content, the Landsataided system has yielded precise and cost-effective estimates of input parameters to hydrologic roodels over the watershed(s)of interest with sufficient accuracy. This investigation suggests that remote sensing has shown a great potential for predicting water yield and aiding water resources managers.

LARS/Purdue University West Lafayette, Indiana The use of computer-aided analysis techniques (CAAT) and multispectral scanner data from aircraft and satellite altitudes has shown considerable promise for water resources applications. Two areas of particular interest are: (1) temperature mapping of surface water to study the environmental impact of thermal effluents and (2) snow-cover mapping in...

Snow is a huge water resource in most parts of the world. Snow water equivalent supplies 1/3 of the water requirement for farming and irrigation throughout the world. Water content estimation of a snow-cover or estimation of snowmelt runoff is necessary for Hydrologists. Several snowmelt-forecasting models have been suggested, most of which require continuous monitoring of snow-cover. Today mo...

We investigated snow cover dynamics using time series of moderate (MODIS) to high (SPOT-4/5, Landsat-8) spatial resolution satellite imagery in a 3700 km2 region of the southwestern French Alps. Our study was carried out in the context of the SPOT (Take 5) Experiment initiated by the Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES), with the aim of exploring the utility of high spatial and temporal re...

Depletion curves of the areal extent of snow cover are shown to be basic information in a snowmelt-runoff model. Originally developed in European mountain basins, the procedure is now applied to simulate the runoff in the Rocky Mountains with the use of the Landsat imagery and air temperature data. The method requires a proper assessment of the recession coefficient of discharge in a given basi...
